Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and proactive
Accounting Manager to join a leading professional services firm in Townsville. This role is designed for a technical expert who enjoys team leadership and high-level client engagement. You will oversee a diverse portfolio of business and individual clients, providing strategic advisory and ensuring excellence in compliance. This is a pivotal role focused on driving growth, mentoring staff, and maintaining the firm's reputation for quality in North Queensland.
Key Duties & Responsibilities Client & Portfolio Management - Act as a primary point of contact and trusted advisor for a diverse client portfolio.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships through proactive communication and service.
- Manage client expectations regarding timelines, fees, and deliverables.
- Identify opportunities to add value through additional advisory and consulting services.
- Support business development by contributing to client acquisition and referral opportunities.
Accounting & Tax Compliance - Prepare and review complex financial statements and income tax returns (Individuals, Companies, Trusts, and SMSFs).
- Oversee BAS, IAS, and all statutory compliance obligations.
- Conduct technical reviews of work prepared by junior and senior team members to ensure accuracy.
- Identify technical risks and implement tax-effective solutions in line with current legislation.
- Ensure 100% on-time lodgement and adherence to professional standards.
Advisory & Technical Leadership - Provide expert technical advice on Income Tax, CGT, GST, FBT, and Division 7A.
- Deliver guidance on business structures, restructuring, and small business CGT concessions.
- Research complex tax matters and provide clear, actionable advice to clients and the team.
- Lead internal technical training and promote a culture of continuous learning.
Team Leadership & Workflow Management - Lead, mentor, and foster the professional development of the accounting team.
- Manage workflow, capacity planning, and job scheduling to optimize productivity.
- Monitor WIP, billing, and recoverability to ensure financial targets are met.
- Foster a collaborative, positive, and high-performing team culture.
Performance Measures - Financial Performance: Maintain a productivity target of >75% and manage WIP/billing effectively.
- Client Success: High-quality compliance outcomes, strong client retention, and successful advisory delivery.
- Team Growth: Measurable improvement in team capability and a positive influence on workplace engagement.
- Technical Excellence: Accuracy of reviewed work and contribution to the firm's technical knowledge base.
Qualifications & Experience - Education: CA or CPA qualified (or nearing completion).
- Experience: Minimum 4+ years within a public practice accounting environment.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of Australian taxation law and accounting standards.
- Management: Proven experience managing a client portfolio and supervising the work of others.
- Systems: Proficiency in Xero and Microsoft Office (Advanced Excel skills preferred).
